6:30 P.M. EXHIBITION FINISSAGE
The Fragile Brutalism of Marcel Breuer
Celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus movement with a photo exhibition on the works of the great architect, Marcel Breuer.
Born in the southern Hungarian city of Pécs in 1902, Marcel Breuer demonstrated his great talent in design by creating innovative seating solutions “conceived solely for functionality” as a student of the Carpentry Workshop of the Bauhaus (1920-1924), in Weimar, Germany. It was no coincidence that he was chosen by the School’s director, Walter Gropius, first to lead the Carpentry Workshop in 1925, then to co-found an architecture firm with him in the U.S. in 1937. With the formative principles of the Bauhaus at play and the experiences stemming from the collaboration with Gropius himself, Breuer moved his practice to New York in 1946, establishing his own firm there. The Hungarian Cultural Center in New York presents a special selection of photos taken on the buildings designed by Breuer in this period. Curator Sára Zalányi will give a guided tour of the exhibition.

Meyke Fashion Exhibit and Fair
Melinda (Meyke) Madarász gains inspiration from traditional Hungarian decorative arts; an outstanding designer, she creates articles of fashion fusing traditional decorative motifs with modern fashion design.
Her creations do not merely incorporate elements from the vast treasury of Hungarian decorative folk motifs, but also replicate the structure and layout of traditional garments. As a designer the distinctive characteristics of the diverse Hungarian folk regions serve as her own palette, but it is with the modern woman in mind that she creates both her haute couture and prêt-à-porter clothing collections. Her collections utilize the decorative motifs of five distinct Hungarian geographic regions, namely, Kalocsa, Matyó/Mezőkövesd, Kalotaszeg, Torockó and Barkó.
