Day of Hungarian Poetry 2017: Screening the Legendary Movie of Sindbad

On the occasion of the Day of Hungarian Poetry (April 11) the Hungarian House of New York hosted the screening of and public discussion on classic Hungarian movie Sindbad.

Co-organized with the Hungarian House NYC and the American Hungarian Library and Historical Society, we were pleased to present the legendary Hungarian picture Sindbad (Szindbád) directed by Zoltán Huszárik, pictured by Sándor Sára, one of Hungary’s most celebrated and distinct filmmakers.

Sindbad is based on the works of author Gyula Krúdy, who adapted the originally Middle Eastern tales for his short stories. The screening was followed by a discussion with Gábor Gelencsér, aesthetician, professor of the Eötvös Loránd University’s Department of Film Studies, who pointed out that Sindbad is an apolitical movie, which is very unusual in its time; and that it breaks the traditional way of narratives and forms but, unlike avantgarde movies, still understandable for the wider audience.

The event started with a reception, where we serve delicacies, regarding that the movie is famous also of it gastronomical aspect.

11th April is the birthday of Hungarian poet Attila József, who was born on that day in 1905. Sindbad is considered to be a poetical movie.
