Sunday, October 11, 2020, 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm

On October 11, we are recalling these stories, exploring the real and fictional threads of the novel, with the author himself.

Pál Závada: Hajó a ködben

The heroes of Pál Závada’s book are the heirs of the country’s largest corporate empire, the Manfréd Weiss Steel and Metal Works. They are well-known figures in economic, political and intellectual circles. As most of them are of Jewish descent and we are in the Spring of 1944, their story — due to the vast wealth of family members — becomes one of the most special, well-known episode of our twentieth-century history. By sacrificing their wealth, they have the opportunity to save their lives.

The book is about compromise, fraud, and betrayal. And while the debates revolve around the destiny of the family, we are also witnessing each character’s decision about their love lives, business matters, and in matters of staying or departing.

The novel also mentions Gabriella Mautner, or  ‘Memi néni’,  who played an important role in the life of our Library.
