Inspired by Béla Bartók’s third piano concerto, Peter Bartok Jr was shot in New York, Paris and Budapest. This film, considered to be the end of a trilogy by Andrés Andreani, (Novak, 2009; Longchamps, 2011) explores the tense limits between reality and fiction.

Synopsis

Laura arrives in New York to join Viktor, a Hungarian filmmaker she has been working with on a documentary about Béla Bartók. At the same time Pierre, a film director from Paris, is in town looking for an actor to play the role of Bartók’s grandson in a fiction film he will be shooting in France. Fiction and reality are intertwined as the characters jump from one story to another in order to locate the missing parts of a puzzle that will unveil a mystery surrounding the death of the famous composer. The film moves between fiction and documentary, biography and invention, and the relationship between Budapest and New York is embedded in its structure.

ABOUT: Andrés Andreani, the director , is an Argentine filmmaker and artist based in Paris with a connection to Hungarian culture through his relationship with Béla Tarr, whom he first met producing his first feature film and later had the opportunity to work with. Andreani finds a personal narrative mixing the absurd, the ordinary, the paradoxical and the fantastic. Insprired by Bartók, Andreani undertakes an audiovisual composition, translating into his own microcosm the atonalities and contrasts of the Hungarian composer’s work, as well as his phrasing, changing tempi, or even his obsession for nature and discovering of primitive origins to find new forms for his own creations.

Two of Andreani's films were previously screening at Hungarian House - NOVAK in 2011 and LONGCHAMPS in 2013.

ABOUT: AFHLE, Hungarian House, now celebrating its 60th year of operation, offers cultural programming and community activities that build the American Hungarian community and its local Yorkville neighborhood in NYC. As a non-governmental and non-denominational cultural center in NYC since 1966, the community center has served children, adults, and seniors and as an educational resource for those of Hungarian descent to learn and stay in touch with their customs, traditions and cultural heritage. As a bridge to our American community, many offered programs are in both English and Hungarian and include Hungarian music, history, literature, science, film, theater, language, youth leadership/scouting, dance, and seasonal heritage activities. For newly immigrated Hungarians becoming accustomed to American society, we serve as a springboard to integration while providing services that facilitate staying in touch and celebrating Hungarian and Hungarian-American ancestry.
