We will be introduced to a significant figure, Protestant pastor Lajos Gulyás, the sole clerical member sentenced to death following the October 1956 Uprising. Despite aiding a communist border guard against the masses seeking retribution for the previous day's attack on protestors, he was later deemed an adversary of the Soviet-aligned Hungarian state. This was due to his communications with Western media and involvement with the organizers of the freedom movement during the brief period of independence from Soviet occupation. Although his actions were classified as third-degree offenses, he was sentenced to death in December 1957 to exemplify the repercussions faced by church officials opposing the Kádár-led government.

About the guest speaker: Kristóf Erdős

Erdős Kristóf (PhD) történész, a Nemzeti Emlékezet Bizottsága tudományos főmunkatársa, a Károli Interdiszciplináris Akadémia egyetemi szakkollégium műhelyvezető mentortanára (Református Emlékezet, Tradíció, Önazonosság [RETRO] képzési műhely). Kutatási területe: 1945–1990 közötti református egyháztörténet, illetve emigrációtörténet.

Kristóf Erdős (PhD) is a historian, a senior research fellow at the National Remembrance Committee, and a workshop leader and mentor teacher at the Károli Interdisciplinary Academy. His research area is Reformed church history between 1945 and 1990, and emigration history.
