MAGYAR HÁZ - HUNGARIAN HOUSE

Our historic, multifunctional community and cultural center in NYC gives home to an array of unique and engaging events, with opportunities for Americans and Hungarians to connect and learn. On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of opening our doors to the community as Hungarian House on 213 East 82nd Street, we look back on building's meaningful history, what the AFHLE, Hungarian House organization has been able to achieve, and at the same time, we plan ahead to assure the survival and sharing of Hungarian culture for future generations in New York City.

The Hungarian House was established by a handful of immigrant Hungarians living in New York City in the early 1960s. They made it possible, with significant donations, to convert a German Gymnastic Society into a cultural center and social gathering place for New York City's Hungarian community and their friends. Since the 1966 opening of the Magyar Ház, several generations of Hungarians and non-Hungarians alike have experienced and enjoyed the wonderful manifestation of Hungarian art and culture here. Some of the history-making personalities we hosted over the decades include Dr. Tibor Eckhardt, Dr. Otto von Habsburg, atomic physicist Dr. Edward Teller, Cardinal Joseph Mindszenty, and the first post-communist Hungarian Prime Minister, József Antall among others.

Today, the building is still busy serving the Yorkville and the American Hungarian community, serving as the NYC base for the local Hungarian Scout troops, and as the home of the Széchenyi István Society and The American Hungarian Library and Historical Society. Currently the Hungarian House is the only physical structure in New York City dedicated to the presentation and preservation of Hungarian art and culture, and to ensure the survival of our beloved bastion of cultural identity and learning for future generations, we ask you to join our endeavors by coming to Hungarian House's 60th Anniversary Fundraising Dinner.
