Film screening and conversation with producer János Szurmay

Almost exactly seventy years ago, during the freezing, fateful days of November 1956, thousands upon thousands of people made the most difficult decision of their lives: leaving everything behind, they set out in search of freedom. It is to this turbulent moment in history, filled with both hope and fear, that director Barnabás Tóth (Those Who Remained) transports us in his captivating film, Mastergame (Mesterjátszma).

Released in 2023, this gripping historical drama is a bold, modernized, and imaginative adaptation of Stefan Zweig’s literary classic, The Royal Game (Chess Story), reimagining the original narrative against the tragic backdrop of the Soviet suppression of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution.

As Soviet tanks flood the streets of Budapest, a young couple in love, Márta (Sára Varga-Járó), a gifted chess champion, and István (Gergely Váradi), attempt to flee Hungary aboard the last refugee train. Yet the train carries more than civilians seeking refuge: priceless sacred treasures of the Catholic Church are also being transported toward the border.

Hot on the trail of these treasures are agents of the communist regime, who subject Father B. (Károly Hajduk), a Catholic priest, to brutal psychological and physical torture in an attempt to force him to reveal their whereabouts. In the torment of solitary confinement, the priest manages to preserve his sanity only by playing chess against himself, using a secretly discovered chess manual and makeshift pieces fashioned from bread. The intertwining storylines eventually converge aboard the speeding train, where a decisive, nerve-racking chess match begins. On the opposite side of the chessboard sits the formidable Czentovics, portrayed by Pál Mácsai. By this point, far more than the fate of the treasures hangs in the balance: the lives of the young lovers and freedom itself are at stake.

Mastergame is more than a commemoration of the national tragedy that unfolded seventy years ago. It is a profoundly human story about the power of the mind, the resilience of the human spirit, survival, and the ability to find light even in the darkest and most hopeless circumstances.

We warmly invite everyone to join us for this extraordinary, deeply moving, and beautifully crafted cinematic experience!
